Founded by journalist-turned-campaigner Michael Kelly in 2009, GIY (Grow It Yourself) has grown from a spark of inspiration into a powerful international movement, encouraging tens of thousands of people - and countless children, through their GROW At School programme - to grow their own food. That vision is brought vividly to life at GROW HQ, the organisation’s striking urban food centre and café at Ardkeen in Waterford city. Set in purpose-built headquarters with organic gardens run by professionals and volunteers, GROW HQ is both a learning hub and a living example of its values. Visitors come to take courses, attend events and enjoy a delicious, seasonal meal, while seeing first-hand how food can be grown and harvested. The mantra is simple – Grow, Cook, Eat – but the impact is profound, bringing health, sustainability and community into focus.
In the café, the daily harvest is transformed into vibrant dishes that are colourful, nutritious and full of flavour. The rule is “100% seasonal veg, no exceptions”, and menus reflect what is ready in the garden that week. Local organic suppliers supplement the produce, ensuring every plate supports Irish growers, farmers and makers. Drinks follow the same philosophy, with organic wines, Metalman Brewery beers and seasonal cordials among the highlights. With its inspiring gardens, engaging classes, and outstanding café, GROW HQ embodies everything GIY stands for – and is a shining example of how Irish producers can be supported at every step from seed to plate.
