Irish diners place a high premium on atmosphere – often rating it even above the quality of food when choosing where to eat out – but this restaurant, although certainly atmospheric, has much more to it than that. As everyone familiar with past winners of our Atmospheric category will know, we seek out establishments that offer very high standards all round, with great atmosphere as the icing on the cake.
Located in the grounds of the gorgeous Dromquinna Manor on the shores of Kenmare Bay - a stunning property rescued from dereliction by John “At Your Service” Brennan and re-opened as a ‘glamping’ destination and wedding venue in 2012 – this stylish waterfront restaurant is beautifully situated in a 19th century boathouse overlooking a charming little harbour with boating facilities for both residents and visitors.
Offering quality casual food during the day, it’s a great amenity for the families holidaying in the “glamping” tents in the grounds, but has also become a favourite spot for locals and visitors.
While perhaps pitched to be a popular destination rather than a foodie event, Chef Benny Scannell’s short menus are enticing and the food is as delicious as it is stylishly presented. Well trained and warmly welcoming staff add to the ambience and it’s hard to imagine a more attractive setting for a relaxing lunch or snack, especially when the weather favours al fresco dining on the terrace.
At night, as the light fades on the mountains across the bay, it becomes a highly atmospheric restaurant that’s fun for groups and yet romantic for twosomes too.
A very special place…
