Glebe Gardens and Cafe
There is something very heartening about a productive garden, where all the plants are useful as well as decorative. Created by Jean and Peter Perry, this five acre seaside garden exists in happy synergy with their other enterprise, the Courtyard Café.
Crops - including unusual varieties like Blauhilde French Beans and Golden Bush courgettes - are grown in their organic potager where the Perrys practice interesting techniques like companion planting to keep pests at bay, then find their way to the table as delicious soups, salads and puddings.
Vegetables are grown in raised beds and mulched to keep moisture in and weeds out, and apple trees are trained as espaliers.
The herb garden, where medicinal and dye plants are grown in beds edged with silver santolina, also serves the café. Other areas of the garden earn their keep too, the cutting garden looks good and is full of excellent flowering plants for the vase like, dahlias, lupins and love in the mist.
Scents from the gravelled courtyard garden - roses, lilies and lemon verbena - billow into the house, and a raised lily pond and an olive tree provide the main focal interest. Further afield, the Harold Barry walk leads through woodland to an amphitheatre overlooking Church Strand Bay.

Inish Beg Estate
Inish Beg is a beautiful private island estate in West Cork; with a stone bridge connecting Inish Beg to the mainland, a few miles from the thriving market town of Skibbereen and the idyllic little port of Baltimore with its sailing, fishing and diving centres. Fanned by the warm currents of the Gulf Stream, the island enjoys an idyllic setting in a micro climate which supports unusual species of flora and fauna.
Inish Beg estate has been sympathetically restored to its former glory over the past 12 years by owners Georgiana and Paul Keane. Set in 97 acres of wooded ground and farm land, even when their nine holiday homes are full to capacity and counting their staff, the population density is still probably of one person to two acres.
Peace, tranquillity, fresh air, beautiful scenery, wildlife, woodland walks and water sports are all on offer at Inish Beg. Some organic vegetables and herbs are available for guests to purchase, as are fresh eggs and honey produced on the Inish Beg estate.
There is a variety of styles available in the award winning accommodation. The Boat House, Inish Beg’s piece de resistance, is equipped to the highest standards with even an otter at the slip. Who could ask for more?
But there is more. Inish Beg House, built in the 1890’s has been lovingly restored and overlooks a sunken garden with views to the estuary. To the rear, within the Victorian walled garden is the Inish Beg full length indoor swimming pool, complete with sauna, steam room and a small gymnasium.
The nine rental properties range in price from Euro 395 - Euro 2,950 per week and shorter stays are accommodated from September through to June. All properties come with private gardens, underfloor heating, open fires, tv, video, dvd, laundry facilities, barbecue and access to wifi. A huge video library is available for guests. Inish Beg is he ideal setting for a relaxed and rejuvenating holiday.
At the water sports centre, guests can take Irish Sailing Association (ISA) courses in power-boating. Rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) can also be hired to visit Sherkin, Cape Clear or some other of Carbery’s 100 Isles. There are a myriad leisure activities on offer in the locality, including, scuba diving, sea kayaking, angling, whale watching and quad biking. And for those preferring less energetic pursuits, cookery courses are held each autumn and spring on the island and horse and carriage drives around the island.
Always, a romantic choice, Inish Beg has also become a sought after wedding venue, catering for civil ceremonies for boutique style weddings at The Boat House and hosting larger marquee wedding receptions on the beautiful waterfront grounds. A vintage car from the vintage car collection is available to transport the bride and groom. Of late, discerning hens and stags are even choosing Inish Beg for their pre-nuptial festivities and The Garden Retreat, our one bedroom apartment is proving a huge favourite with couples.
