This characterful pub beside the Everyman Palace Theatre was established in 1875 and is named after its founder.
Long before the arrival of the "theme pub", Lowrey's was famous for having windows which originated from Kilkenny Cathedral, but it also has many of its own original features, including a fine mahogany bar. It has been run by Anthony and Catherine O'Riordan since 1995 and they lay emphasis on the fact that it's a family-run bar and always welcoming.
Together with Eleanor Murray, who has been chef from the outset, Catherine oversees the kitchen herself and it's a good place for an fairly priced home-cooked meal - popular dishes like home-made quiche or lasagne served with salad or fries, for example, or seafood bake, filled with salmon, monkfish & cod, topped with creamed potatoes and toasted breadcrumbs.
It's popular with local business people at lunch time, and plain or toasted sandwiches are available to take away.
