Nestling on the wooded slopes of Brandon Hill on the west bank of the loveliest part of the Barrow Valley, Robert & Fran Durie’s comfortably updated classic farmhouse enjoys a secluded position close to this beautiful river and with views across to the Blackstairs mountains.
The house is set in delightful gardens and, as well as a cosy sitting room, there’s a large conservatory where guests can relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere in the knowledge that the charms and entertainment of Graiguenamanagh are only a couple of miles away - and the pretty village of Inistioge only 16km (10 miles) of lovely driving across the flank of the hill.
The four bright and airy bedrooms have a real country atmosphere and – while all have smart shower rooms and tea and coffee making facilities - are highly individual, taking inspiration from native flowers.
In the Bluebell Room, for example, sunny sky blue walls and bedding provide a cheerful contrast to traditional brass and iron beds, while the cream and blue Primrose Room has a cottagey feel, with sloping ceilings and pine furniture.
Breakfast is a point of pride, featuring local and artisan foods, and it’s served in an unusual dining room with a massive old fireplace alcove dating back to the time when it was the kitchen – now, instead of the range, there’s an antique sideboard displaying the day’s fresh fruits and cereals.
Dinner is only available by arrangement (stuffed loin of pork with home grown vegetables perhaps), but there’s a choice of good restaurants in Graiguenamanagh and Inistioge – and you may be sure that this hospitable couple will point you in the right direction.
